Attendance

Callio

Glyncoed Primary School operates the Callio Attendance system. As we begin to make our way out of the pandemic, it is more important than ever that children regroup and reengage with all of the benefits of a regular attendance.  Regardless of the reasons for absence parents will receive a letter every half-term informing you of your child’s attendance within the Callio banding. How does the banding work?

Attendance Monitoring Pathway

Step 1: School intervention through Class Teachers and Headteacher / Deputy Head Teacher / Assistant Headteacher:

  • 1st days response through telephone, text or e-mail

  • Monitoring all absence especially those unauthorised as notified by class teachers

  • Working together with parents and pupils to identify underlying cause of non-attendance; medical needs, bullying, social problems, disaffection, lateness, ALN.

  • Truancy reports

  • Monitoring lateness

Step 2: Fortnightly meeting between Headteacher / Deputy Head Teacher / Assistant Headteacher and Ed. Welfare Officer - to review previous week’s attendance that may result in identification of possible concern and action pupils:-

These may include;

  • Block absences of more than 10 sessions without explanation

  • Irregular patterns of attendance with frequent unauthorised absence

  • Prolonged poor attendance pattern

  • Pupils with less that 90% attendance in a term period

  • Children at risk who exhibit poor or irregular attendance

  • Suspicious absences without medical corroboration

  • School refusers

  • Absences connected with possible child safeguarding issues

  • Sudden deterioration in attendance without any specific reason and no explanation given

Actions may include:

  • Letters to parents informing of concern

  • Telephone conversation with parents

  • Pupils who are persistently late after close of registration

Step 3: Identification of Concern and Action pupils which can lead to the following:

  • Home visit be EWO

  • Meeting between Headteacher / Deputy Head Teacher / Assistant Headteacher and parent only

  • Meeting between Headteacher / Deputy Head Teacher / Assistant Headteacher, EWO and Office Attendance Manager. Pupil and parents to discuss action points that will need to be reviewed every half term, until desired outcomes are met; Action plan prepared and signed by all parties present.

If no improvement made then pupil moved on to Step 4

Step 4: Attendance Panels

  • Parents and pupils will be invited to a formal meeting with Headteacher / Deputy Head Teacher / Assistant Headteacher, EWO, School Nurse and ALNCO, when appropriate

  • Intensive monitoring of pupil’s attendance

  • A time limited, in-depth programme to be put in place with involvement from the family

  • Attendance Plan reviews to be held half termly

  • Referral to other agencies/services

  • Formal letters from EWS to parents

  • Pre-court meetings

  • Consideration of statutory intervention

Step 5: EWS enforces statutory action and begin Court proceedings.

What impact does low attendance have on my child?

In primary schools less than 65% of children achieve good results in English and Maths with an average of 15 days absence a year, compared to almost 90% where the average is less than 8 days. Parents can be very surprised at how quickly their children can accumulate 15 days absence within a year.

Research has also shown that children who are not in school can become vulnerable. For example, children who play truant are more likely to be drawn into crime than those who do not.
